James · name changed

James once believed authority in the home depended on control and fear. A NOCAPAD community dialogue challenged those beliefs through discussions about positive masculinity, power, communication and the effects of violence on children and partners.

Listening to a survivor’s testimony helped him reflect on the fear his own behaviour caused. Facilitators encouraged men to become partners in building peaceful families and to take responsibility for changing harmful behaviour.

James reports that he stopped using violence to resolve disagreements. He and his wife now discuss decisions about farming, finances and their children’s education together.

As a community male champion, he shares what he has learned in dialogues, church gatherings and village meetings. He encourages men to seek help before anger leads to violence and to measure strength through care and responsibility.
